The 5th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 27th September 1780 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Ruler, a bay colt by Young Marske out of Flora, owned by Mr William Bethell, trained by Christopher Jackson at Middleham and Langton Wold, and ridden by Middleham based jockey John Mangle. The winner’s first race was on 24th May 1780 in the Hunmanby 25 Guineas Sweepstake in which he defeated Foxhuntoribus and Young Ragman. He went to the St Leger as second favourite and overpowered the odds on Antagonist. In his 4 year old career he ran third at York behind Fortitude, and then returned to Hunmanby to win a £50 race. In his final race he broke down in a race won by Thornville. |
